Ambient

Ambient lighting is uniform lighting that does not cast a directional shadow. It “minimizes form and bulk and dematerializes spaces" [1].

Focal

Focal lighting is directional lighting that has a focus or a center. It “marks the most important elements” in a space [2].

Sparkle or Decorative

Sparkle or Decorative layer is “scintillation”. It is “a tiny bombardment of points of light” that stimulates the body and senses [3].

Task

Task lighting is provided based on the work to be conducted in a space, over and above the ambient illumination levels in a space [4].
