In the last weeks first year students have been working on the Art2Space project. At the beginning of the semester, a painting was assigned to each student and they had to examine the bi-dimensional artwork, identify and assess colors in the image as well as elements of design. On September 6th, first-year students presented their extraordinary projects and they were video taped. Students then had the opportunity to attend the “Talking about Design” workshop given by the UNCG Speaking Center staff. Every year Professor Felicia Dean and Professor Maruja Torres bring them in to talk about organizing a design presentation; effective delivery competencies, and managing a Q&A sessions.
After the workshop, students meet with the Speaking Center staff for one-on-one consultations where they will review their personal videotapes and get customized feedback. They will be videotaped again at least two more times throughout the semester as they present other parts of their projects. The professors consider that with this approach, the students’ presentation skills will have improved substantially by the end of the semester.
